Practice Techniques for Card Fanning

I’m Joe Marshall with expertvillage.com and today we’re going to learn about fans and spreads. Just wanted to take a minute to discuss some tips on practicing, most magicians will tell you that when you practice your fans you’ll want to use the miniature decks, they’re really small they’re like for kids and practice with those and then go to a normal deck cards and practice that way. I think if you really want to be an expert at something you want to overdue the practice sessions, you’ll want to use old decks of cards that don’t spread well and you want to use as many decks as you can. In this case we’re going to use two, these are still new but what you want to do is practice your classic thumb spreads like so with two decks of cards and this also is easier because you can practice your one handed spreads and reverse fans with two decks of cards with both your hands having the straining going into it. They say just most of the time just practice with one hand, have a dominate hand to do all of your fanning with and I think if you really want to be an expert you should be able to do all the moves with both your hands with more cards than are necessary so when you actually do go to use one deck of cards it’s so much easier the dimensions will seem so much smaller and you just pop out fans a lot faster than you normally could if you were practicing with smaller cards and then going to a regular full sized deck, they say use bridge cards or miniature cards, I advice not to do that practice with more cards than necessary and do it with an old deck to where it looks somewhat decent with a lot of cards. So when you go and pickup your normal deck that’s extremely slick, brand new, it hasn’t been shuffled or anything you just pop out easy spreads and fans.
